State Says Addresses of About 1,500 Improperly Shared
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- The state Department of Public Safety says it accidentally gave addresses of about 1,500 people who registered their vehicles to private companies, after those people had requested the information stay private.
DPS says the data went to the companies Experian, RL Polk and SafetyFirst Recalls as part of a "bulk motor vehicle" database. It contains all motor vehicle titles or registrations in the state.
State and federal laws require the state to give motor vehicle data to those companies because it helps in sending out safety recall notices. But the law also allows people to request their information stay private.
DPS spokesman Bruce Gordon says there was "no data breach" and says there's no indication that private data was used unlawfully.
