MANKATO (AP) - Rutgers says it has dismissed quarterback Philip Nelson from its football program in the wake of assault charges filed in Minnesota.

Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood made the announcement Tuesday.

Nelson is a former quarterback for Minnesota. He played in 11 games last season, but announced afterward that he would transfer to Rutgers.

He was charged Monday with two counts of felony assault in connection with a weekend fight that left another man severely injured. Authorities say Nelson kicked 24-year-old Isaac Dallas Kolstad in the head after another man punched Kolstad.

Nelson's attorney says his client was not the aggressor.

Flood says the Rutgers football family is sending thoughts and prayers to Kolstad and his family.
