UNDATED - A new report suggests meat will be more popular than ever here in the new year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the average American will eat 222 pounds of meat in 2018. That surpasses the current record set in 2004.

Karin Schaefer is the Executive Director of the Minnesota Beef Council. She says all forms of protein are the popular trend right now.

For a long time we've known that protein has become more and more popular amongst consumers throughout the country.  Particularly here in Minnesota protein is extremely popular.  So, this isn't a huge shock to us, but it is really exciting.

It's a big turnaround from 2007 to 2014 when meat and poultry demand dropped nine percent.

Schaefer says hamburger is by far the most popular kind of beef.

The USDA recommends adults eat five to six ounces of protein daily. However, they're forecasting the average person will eat nearly 10 ounces of meat and poultry every day.
