MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Northstar commuter rail service between Big Lake and Minneapolis will be shut down through Tuesday morning after a freight train derailed in Fridley.

The train derailed on a road washed out from overnight rains near a Mississippi River tributary Saturday, injuring the engineer and conductor.

The Star Tribune reports 17 railcars and two locomotives derailed at about 7:15 a.m. Saturday

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Company spokeswoman Amy McBeth said the engineer and conductor were the only crew members aboard and they were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Metro Transit says the cancellation will impact all regularly scheduled Northstar trips Saturday, Sunday and Monday in addition to Twins service on those days.

It's expected to resume Tuesday morning.
