Minnesotans Can Skip the DMV Line and Get Tabs With Groceries

Convenience rules. That's why we have so many big box stores that try to sell you All Of The Things in one spot. They can charge you more, too: for the "convenience".

Minnesotans in the Twin Cities metro area who are buying groceries before remembering that their vehicle tabs are expired don't have to worry about making an extra stop before going home. It's called Minnesota DVS Now.

Twin Cities-area Cub Foods are teaming with the Minnesota Department of Vehicle Services to offer a convenient portal to renew your vehicle registration. So far, there are 18 of these kiosks in the metro area.

Hopefully, other communities around the state can follow suit.

What You Need To Use Minnesota DVS Now

Of course, you do need to come prepared; for security reasons, you need the following to renew your vehicle registration at a MN DVS Now kiosk:

Renewal notice with your correct current address
License plate number
Insurance provider's name, policy number, and expiration date
The county in which the vehicle is kept
either the Account ID number from the renewal notice or the house/building number of your current address (that's on the renewal notice)
the last 3 characters of your vehicle's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

In addition to the renewal fee, you'll pay a bit extra for the convenience: a $4.95 service fee for each vehicle being renewed plus a 2.49% convenience fee for using a credit card. Payment options include AMEX, Discover, MasterCard, and Visa credit or debit cards.
