COLD SPRING - The new memorial dedicated to Martin Luther King junior has a connection to Central Minnesota.

Cold Spring Granite Company played a key role in the construction of the memorial for King.  The granite was actually quarried up in Ontario, Canada, and then brought to Cold Spring where the benches and walls were created.

The walls, which surround the memorial, include quotes from King, JFK and other civil rights leaders.  Once they were fabricated, the materials were delivered to Washington, D.C.

The site opened to the public on Monday, ahead of a dedication ceremony on Sunday where President Barack Obama is scheduled to speak.

UPDATE: The dedication ceremony on Sunday has been postponed due to Hurricane Irene.
