Kids Fish Free on “Take A Kid Ice Fishing Weekend”

ST. CLOUD - Kids over 16-years-old and adults can both fish without a license from January 13th through January 15th for "Take A Kid Ice Fishing Weekend".

The weekend allows Minnesota residents the chance to try out ice-fishing without as much large of an upfront investment.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resource's Jeff Ledermann says this is just one of many ways to help families get interested in outdoor activities.

"We know that participation in fishing and hunting has been decreasing in the last few years. We believe it is really important for youth and adults to get outside and learn about the great resources we have in Minnesota."

Ledermann says the DNR has some great resources to help first time and novice ice fishers be prepared.

"On our website we have some helpful insights. Tips about clothing and safety. We want people to be safe on the ice."

Outside of the DNR's website Ledermann also suggested checking with local bait shops for tips on where to fish and good ideas for how to stay safe.
