Is it just me or are we seeing more state record fish being caught lately? Another record was set recently as a Rice County lake gave up a huge black crappie. The Minnesota DNR confirmed the new state record, and you've got to see this slab!

New Certified Weight Record

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources just confirmed that a new state record fish was caught in Rice County. According to a social media post the new record black crappie was a 4-pound+ behemoth that came out of Cedar Lake.

You'd need a bigger pan for this fish!
David Selle of Lino Lakes reeled in this 4-pound, 1 ounce black crappie from Cedar Lake in Rice County! It now holds the certified weight state record, topping the previous record by just over an ounce.
Congratulations, David!

The record breaking fish was caught on May 3rd.

Cedar Lake is located in Shieldsville Township in South Central Minnesota.

Certified Weight Records vs Catch and Release Records

Fishing records can be a little confusing in Minnesota if you don't follow. For certified weight records, fish have to be weighed on a certified scale and an application needs to be submitted and approved by the MN DNR.

For catch and release records, fish are documented using catch and release application materials and then submitted by the anglers who caught them.

If you think you've caught a state record, you should head to the DNR website for the appropriate forms and applications.
