ST. PAUL, (AP) - Sen. Al Franken says it's too early to extend the signup period for insurance under the federal health overhaul.

Franken said Thursday he believes problems with the federal health insurance website are "inexcusable." But he said he thinks they're getting better.

Several of Franken's Democratic colleagues in the U.S. Senate are suggesting an extension beyond the March 31 end of open enrollment.

Franken, who is up for re-election next year, said it's too early to make that call.

Franken said he's very pleased with the progress of Minnesota's insurance exchange, which is being run by the state.
