ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Two puppies have been found discarded in a recycling bin behind a St. Paul animal hospital, one dead and the other barely clinging to life.

Police are investigating the case as possible animal cruelty.

The dogs were found Wednesday morning by a manager at the animal hospital. One was dead and the other was cowering, emaciated and dangerously underweight.

Wendy Granroos of Scenic Hills Animal Hospital says staffers nicknamed the survivor Scrappy because of where he was found. She says he was 20 pounds when found, and has gained 5 pounds in two days.

She says Scrappy is believed to be a mix of German shepherd and Australian shepherd.

Granroos says it's not clear how the other dog died.
