Dayton Takes Issue With GOP Timeline for Upgrading IDs

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Gov. Mark Dayton and House Republicans are clashing over how quickly to handle a dispute with the federal government over driver's licenses that could spell trouble for air travelers.

It's unclear when stronger federal standards for IDs for domestic flights will take effect. But the prospect of Minnesota residents being turned away from domestic flights has some state officials calling for a quick fix, perhaps in a special session.

A draft of legislation prepared by House GOP lawmakers reportedly wouldn't make the necessary upgrades until at least early 2018.

Dayton says the Legislature needs to act sooner to put any confusion to rest. Republican Rep. Peggy Scott says it's one of several ideas on the table and the timeline could be sped up.
