MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (AP) - On the day that California's governor signed a bill lifting the minimum wage to $10 within three years, Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton has made clear he'd be disappointed if the Legislature doesn't push up his state's wage floor next session.

Dayton spoke to a retiree council of the AFL-CIO on Wednesday. He says it's wrong that Minnesota has a lower minimum wage than all of its Midwest neighbors and one of the lowest in the country.

While the federal minimum of $7.25 per hour often applies, some workers in Minnesota can earn as little as $5.25 from small employers.

The Democratic-led House and Senate deadlocked on a minimum wage plan last session. Dayton says he'd "settle for" $9.50 per hour but wouldn't mind seeing it go up more.
