MONTICELLO -- A barn fire on New Year's Eve in Monticello Township left several farm animals dead.

The Wright County Sheriff's Office says around 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, firefighters responded to a fire in the 1800 block of 85th Street Northeast.

According to authorities, the homeowners woke up shortly after 5:40 a.m. to the sound of loud popping coming from their barn. When fire crews arrived, the barn was fully engulfed.

Crews were able to put out the blaze, but the barn is considered a total loss. Several horses, two dogs, and around 30 cats were killed in the fire.
