ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Corrections officials say three correctional officers from Stillwater and Oak Park Heights prisons have resigned after the killing of one of their colleagues.

Officials say Officer Joseph Gomm was attacked at the state's flagship prison in Stillwater Wednesday afternoon by the inmate was serving time for homicide.

A spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections tells reporters the reasons the three officers resigned won't be made public.

In a statement released by the Department of Corrections, the family said it was devastated "by the senseless and tragic loss."

More than 1,600 inmates are housed at the 104-year-old Stillwater prison, where about a third of the prisoners are serving time for homicide.
