Central Minnesota lakes have already seen ice out this spring but northern Minnesota lakes still largely have it. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON this week. The state of Minnesota is just over 2 weeks away from the fishing opener.

The ice is almost completely gone from Central Minnesota lakes. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON this week. He says he hasn't been out open water fishing yet but has talked to some who have.

A bill in the legislature that would have reduced the walleye limit from 6 to 4 was dropped in the latest versions of the environmental and natural resources bill. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON this week. Schmitt says it appears that won't go through this year despite gaining support this session.

Turkey hunting is coming up next week. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON today. He says turkey hunting is growing in popularity and Central Minnesota has a healthy population of turkeys.

Ice fishing can still happen in the state of Minnesota this week according Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News but he says "it's pretty much done around here". He says those that want to continue to ice fish could drive as close as the Brainerd lakes area or further north.

Ice conditions are still stable on most Central Minnesota lakes despite the stretch of 50s and 60 degree weather earlier this week. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON today. He says the local ice conditions have stabilized with 30 and 40 degree temperatures for much of this week and 30s and 40s forecasted for the weekend.

Ice fishing has become a bit slushy due to the warmer weather and sunny skies in the past week. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON this week. He says this should be the last weekend to drive any type of vehicles on the ice locally with conditions changing quickly. Schmitt says we have approximately 3 feet of ice on most lakes.

The Minnesota State legislature is expected to look at walleye limits on Minnesota lakes during the legislative session. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON today. He says some special interest groups are pushing for the walleye limit to move from 6 to 4 fish.

This weekend is the last weekend for walleye, northern pike and bass ice fishing in Minnesota for the season. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON this week. Those seasons close at midnight Sunday. Schmitt says fishing walleye is still accepted on the border lakes up north through April 14.

A wolf hunt in Minnesota isn't likely anytime soon. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON today. Schmitt says a ruling by a judge in California in favor of the people suing the Federal government to reinstate wolves onto the endangered species list.
