ST. JOSEPH -- The city of St. Joseph is searching for a recreation director.

The part-time position was approved by the city council at their Monday night meeting.  City administrator Kris Ambuehl says they're seeking someone who can dedicate between 10-15 hours per week to developing community programs.

"For right now, we're looking to set up community programs like youth baseball and some other outdoor activities. We also want to use our community center a little more effectively."

Earlier this fall, the city council opted to save money by trimming a full-time recreation director position to part-time. Ambuehl says the job could develop into something full-time in the future, particularly after the Jacob Wetterling Community Center is finished in the next few years.

"We're at a point where we need someone with the background to put in about 10 hours a week. We just don't have the ability to put that workload on any of the staff we have now."

The recreation director position will be posted internally for five days before being accessible to the public.
