RICE -- It was a special day for the students and staff at Rice Elementary.

Organizers Nancy Davis and Kelsey Bean say the Walk for Life Event has been going on for about 10 years at the school. Davis says the walk started to help one of their own.

"It began with a colleague of ours who lost her son to cancer. So she is our inspiration, she is the reason we started this as a district," says Davis.

Bean says the walk has become the highlight of the year for the students as well.

"They know we live it and plan it all year long and sometimes I feel they get more excited then we do," says Bean.

Throughout the day each class will take turns walking the route leading up to the community walk in the evening.

"We will be here until seven tonight walking with anyone who wants to come out and walk with us," says Davis.

They hope to raise about $10,000 for the American Cancer Society and all are welcome to join the walk.
