Minnesota Reboots Beargrease Sled Dog Race

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Thirty mushers and 420 dogs are hitting Minnesota trails in a rebooted John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon that offers new features to make it easier for fans to follow along.

Sunday's Beargrease is the longest dog sled race in the Lower 48 states and is a qualifier for Alaska's famed Iditarod. The nearly 400-mile run along the north shore of Lake Superior once rivaled the Iditarod for prestige and prize money. But the Beargrease has struggled in recent years, and the 2014 run was actually canceled last year.

But new organizers took over the event and immediately canceled the cancellation.

The 30th running starts in Duluth. New features let fans who don't want to brave the cold watch a live video stream. They also can track individual sleds via GPS.
