Minnesota Leaders To Discuss Special Session Prospects
ST. PAUL (AP) - After negotiating by letters and press releases, Minnesota's top state officials will get in the same room to discuss a possible September special session.
Gov. Mark Dayton said Wednesday that he plans to meet on Friday with the Democratic and Republican leaders from the House and Senate. They are trying to work out ground rules for a session focused primarily on storm disaster relief.
They generally agree that Minnesota legislators should approve a $4.5 million state match for federal disaster aid affecting 18 counties - including Stearns and Benton - hit by strong June storms. But the parties are in dispute over whether two recently approved taxes should be revisited.
Dayton and Democrats want to get rid of an accidental tax on farm equipment repair. Republicans say a sales tax on warehousing services should go, too.
