GARRISON -- If you are still embracing winter, there's a big event this weekend out on the ice at Lake Mille Lacs. The 14th annual Mille Lacs Kite Crossing will be held on Saturday and Sunday.

Spokesman Tighe Belden says the main event is the big race.

It's an extreme challenge that we've been putting on for 14 years.  Our hopes are, if the conditions support it, we'll go all the way across the lake and back.  It's 14 miles out and 14 miles back.

Belden says they're expecting about 100 competitors to sign-up. He says the race will be held either on Saturday or Sunday, depending on the best day for the wind conditions.

He says spectators are highly encouraged to come watch, especially the freestyle activities where kiters get 30 to 40 feet into the air.

Belden says it will be a chance for you to check out the sport, and possibly take it up as a hobby yourself.

We teach people who are eight to 80 years old.  We have a few 80-year-old kiters who are still enjoying it.  It's a sport for everybody.  It's a great year-round sport, this is our winter version of it, but many of us are out on the area lakes in the summer.
