ST. CLOUD -- A fundraising dinner was held today celebrating the life of Alexander Voigt, the foreign-exchange student who died in the plane crash in Sauk Rapids last summer.

St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis, whose family hosted Voigt for his 10-month stay in the United States, says the event was held to honor the life of Alexander.

"Today actually would have been Alexander's 17th birthday," Kleis says. "We wanted to remember [the good times], this is a celebration of his life."

Earlier in the day, Kleis says he and Alexander's friends from the area had a chance to Skype with Alexander's friends and family back in Germany.

"We had an opportunity to talk about Alexander which connected the two groups," Kleis says.

The proceeds from the free will donations will go towards a memorial bench that will be placed along the Mississippi River this summer.

If you missed the fundraiser but still want to help, Kleis says you can donate to the Alexander Voigt Memorial Fund at Falcon National Bank.
