Marcus stopped by today from The Hemker Park & Zoo in Freeport and brought with him Fred & Wilma, Nene geese that have origins in the islands of Hawaii.  Hemker Park & Zoo has approximately 15 Nene geese right now, with a hopefully growing population. Fred and Wilma are mates, and unlike other birds, the female is head of household. She leads the way as he follows behind. The only difference you can tell between the two is the size of their necks. The male has a much larger neck than the female.

Hemker Park & Zoo is still open for the season, 7 days a week, with some exciting opportunities coming. Boo at the Zoo is always a great trick or treating event for the kids held in October, and coming up on September 9th, you can enjoy Fall Zoo Fest.  Discounted admission $8.00 + tax/person.

Along with the regular zoo attractions, there are also miniature-horse-drawn wagon rides and face-painting for the kids, Amish crafts and the sale of harvest produce, including pumpkins and apples, it's a hit with both adults and kids.
