ST. CLOUD -- Abounding Joy Lutheran Church broke ground on their future site in St. Cloud this morning (Sunday).

The new church will be located near Stearns County Road 120 and Amblewood Drive.

Abounding Joy bought almost 9 acres of land last year.

Pastor Tom Wright says the site they chose has been vacant for years.

"The site was previously purchased by a different denomination and they were planning to put a church here but it never happened and it's been sitting empty for about 10 years," says Wright.

Abounding Joy Lutheran Church currently conducts Sunday services in the community room of the Boy Scouts of America building on Pinecone Road in Sartell.

"We've had a very good relationship with the boy scouts, they've allowed us to use their community room every Sunday, the only thing is you have to tear down and set up every week," says Wright.

Pastor Wright says the new church will have plenty of room for their growing congregation.

"Basic first phase includes a worship area for about 300 people, a large gathering space, offices and classrooms, and space to expand in the future," says Wright.

Construction on the 10,000-square-foot Church will cost about $1.7-million.

Pastor Wright says they hope to hold Sunday services in their new building come this spring.
