U of M to Offer Gender-Neutral Student Housing

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The University of Minnesota is preparing to offer gender-neutral housing at its Twin Cities campus.

Starting in the fall of 2015, up to several dozen upper-division students will have access to campus apartments regardless of sex or what gender they identify with. Reports say that transgender students have been pushing for the change.

It's different than co-ed housing, which lets male and female students live in residence halls on the same floor. In gender neutral housing, biological males and females who identify with the other sex will be able to share living space. Non-transgender students will also be allowed. All participants would have to opt in to the arrangement.

Gender-neutral housing is already available at several Minnesota public colleges.
