Stearns County will be asking the St. Cloud City Council to support a speed study on Veterans Drive in the newly constructed portion of the West Metro Corridor.
A busy east-west corridor which divides St. Cloud and Sartell will undergo some major construction starting next year. Stearns County Road 120 links Veterans Drive to the west with Highway 15 to the east. Stearns County Assistant Engineer Jodi Teich says the plan calls for roundabouts to be built.
After a year of lane restrictions, road closures, and traffic jams, the West Metro Corridor project in northwest St. Cloud is nearing completion. A wetter than normal summer threatened the project's completion date, but the project engineer says a dry September saved the project from spilling over into next year.
Stearns County's Highway Department dug into its own bank account to keep the West Metro Corridor project going during the government shutdown. Stearns County Assistant Engineer Jodi Teich says they paid less than $3,500 in materials testing and one contract payment of about $685,000.
Work on the West Metro Corridor project can take place at night after the St. Cloud City Council approved the request this week. The night work won't be a common occurrence, but rather only a handful of times.
