As winter drags on, many anglers are feeling the pinch of dwindling ice. A new snowfall could make things even tougher this weekend.

With a warm snap affecting ice conditions, anglers are finding new ways to enjoy the last weekend of the walleye season.

Ice fishing is the next season in Minnesota and for some it is already underway. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. He says he is surprised how quickly Central Minnesota lakes froze and there a people ice fishing on lakes throughout the state.

The warmer than normal weather in Central Minnesota has caused a late start to the ice fishing season. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. Schmitt explains the temperatures are getting close to normalizing this week but the ice locally is generally not safe and he's waiting at least a week before giving ice fishing a shot here.

The promise of winter has many itching to get out and enjoy time on the lakes, but the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources warns that ice conditions around the state are becoming increasingly poor.

Officials say Minnesota's recent warm weather has led to treacherous ice conditions in some areas of the state.

Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON today. He says ice conditions have deteriorated quickly in the past 10 days due to the warmer weather. He says shorelines and boat accesses are seeing less ice or thin ice on many lakes in Central Minnesota.
