Fatal crash

Family and friends across the globe are mourning three members of a family killed when a pickup truck crashed head-on into their minivan near Willmar.

A head-on collision near Willmar has claimed the lives of three people: a 68-year-old woman, her adult daughter and her 8-year-old granddaughter. The State Patrol says the accident happened Friday about 9 p.m. on Highway 12.

A funeral is set for the 5-month-old son of Southwest Minnesota State men's basketball coach Brad Bigler and his wife Heather. Services for Drake Bigler will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church in Marshall.

Charges say the man accused of driving drunk and killing a Minnesota coach's son had a blood-alcohol content more than four times the legal limit. Thirty-eight-year-old Dana Schoen of Starbuck faces three criminal vehicular homicide or operation charges.

The men's basketball coach at Southwest Minnesota State University is in critical condition after a crash in western Minnesota that killed his 5-month-old son. The Minnesota State Patrol says the coach, 33-year-old Brad Bigler, is hospitalized in Sioux Falls, S.D. Five-month-old Drake Phillip Bigler was killed, and two other occupants were injured.

A Clear Lake man is dead after a one vehicle crash in Sherburne County Wednesday night. Sheriff's officials say a passerby noticed a vehicle on its roof and partially submerged in the Elk River.

The driver of a Hummer that struck and killed a motorist near Opole in August of 2009 has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. The sentencing of 44-year-old Eugene Rivetts ends a 2-and-a-half year saga as to who was the driver of the Hummer.

The Minnesota State Patrol says speed contributed to a February crash that killed four North Dakota State University students on their way back to school. The patrol also concluded that the driver was not driving for the conditions.

A Waite Park man has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from that wrong-way crash last April where a man and an unborn baby were killed.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation has been working in recent years to install more cable barriers in the medians of highways and interstate where cross-median crashes tend to occur. Unfortunately, there was no cable median barrier along I-94 where four college students died Monday.
