With spring in full swing and the Cold Weather Rule set to expire on Sunday, Xcel Energy is encouraging customers to apply for help with their bills.

Minnesota’s Cold Weather Rule goes into effect next month.

The Minnesota Cold Weather Rule starts today (Wedneday) and Xcel Energy is taking steps to ensure people who have trouble paying their energy bills get the help they need.

With the Cold Weather Rule set to expire on Sunday, Xcel Energy advices you to make arrangements to manage your overdue bills. If you fail to contact your energy provider you could have your service disconnected.

Minnesota's Cold Weather Rule, for people who have trouble paying their heating bills, begins tomorrow (Saturday). Under the rule, eligible residential energy customers are protected from service disconnection through April 15th.

The state rule that prevents utility companies from turning off the heat to people who get behind on their bills resumes on Saturday. It's called the cold weather rule and it applies from Oct. 15 to April 15.
