ST. CLOUD -- Stearns County is going to install drop boxes for you to safely dispose of your old prescription drugs.

Chief Deputy Sheriff Bruce Bechtold told county commissioners it's both a safety issue and an environmental one. Bechtold says they are working with the Environmental Services Department to run the program. He says the goal is to get the drugs out the home and safely dispose of them without the drugs getting into the groundwater.

Bechtold says they will kick-off the program on April 30th when the federal government holds it's national "drug take back" event.

The sheriff's department will place lock boxes at the Law Enforcement Center in St. Cloud at first. Other lock boxes will likely be placed in other Stearns County communities in the future.

The cost to get the program up and running is about $8,000 and will be paid for with SCORE Fund dollars. It is a fund set up to help promote recycling.
