ST. JOSEPH - The city of St. Joseph could begin construction on a downtown community gathering space as soon as next spring.

The idea for the community center came up about three years ago as a project to be partially funded by local option sales tax dollars, and the council has since been figuring out what kinds of features should be part of the center.

Now, they're holding an open house starting at 6:30 Wednesday night at city hall, so St. Joe residents can weigh in on what they'd like in a community center.

City Administrator Judy Weyrens says the goal is to fill a need not served in town already.

Weyrens says the city bought the building next to city hall. If they choose to use the exisiting building, it will need a new roof and mechanical system.
