RUSSIA -- The United States took the Gold Medal at the 2013 National Geographic World Championship held in St. Petersburg, Russia yesterday (Tuesday).

The U.S. competed with teams representing 17 regions from across the world. The competition was moderated by celebrity TV host of Jeopardy, Alex Trebek.

Fifteen-year-old Gopi Ramanathan from Sartell was among two other teens on the U.S. team.

He says even though the team was confident going into the competition he was in shock when they won.

The team is expected to make their way back to the U.S. tomorrow morning.

The World Championship is held every two years. Since the first competition in 1993 the United States has taken six world titles.
