ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Temporary faculty members at Macalester College are taking steps to form a union.

Campus organizers filed a petition Thursday with the National Labor Relations Board to hold a union election for adjunct professors at the St. Paul college.

It's the first group of adjuncts in Minnesota to attempt to unionize since an organizing campaign was launched in the Twin Cities in January.

SooJin Pate, a member of the organizing committee, says temporary hires now make up nearly half the faculty at Macalester.

Pate says part-time adjuncts at the school are paid as little as $5,000 a course with no job security and few benefits.

Macalester Provost Kathleen Murray says the school pays adjunct instructors more than many colleges.
