CANYON, Minn. (AP) - A 60-year-old grandfather has died after he jumped into Lake Nichols in northeastern Minnesota to try to help his grandchildren who were panicking in the water.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says authorities got a call about a water emergency at about 1 p.m. Friday on the lake near Canyon.

Authorities say Douglas Yentsch of Janesville had been pulling his grandchildren on a tube behind a paddleboat when the tube flipped over and the kids panicked, even though they had lifejackets on.

Yentsch jumped in to help them. He was not wearing a life vest and he went underwater.

He was under water for about 30 minutes before neighbors found him. Authorities say he could not be revived.
