UNDATED -- A bike route from the Mississippi headwaters in Northern Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico is closer to becoming a reality.

MnDOT officials are expected to announce a map of the route in the coming weeks. The route will use existing roads and bike paths.

Spokesman Dan Collins says they're not sure yet just how popular this new national "Mississippi River Tail" will be.

Collins says the river combined with biking should equal a popular trail.

He says the good news is, because they're using existing roads and trails, the cost for the entire project is pretty minimal. Money will be spent only on mapping, signage and marketing.
