Not everyone has everything growing up. Many people grow up without a lot and don't even notice it. People who grow up without having a silver spoon in their mouths often learn and develop traits that will serve them well for the rest of their lives. Here are 9 traits that many people who grew up without much seem to have.

  • Resourcefulness - when you don't have extra coin, when something breaks and you need the thing that's broken you are going to find a way to get by without it, or you'll learn to fix it real quick.
  • Empathy - those who grew up with nothing often show more empathy towards others. Often times they are better at reading emotions in people, than those who grew up with plenty.
  • Strong Work Ethic - When the dollars aren't rolling in, and you've got to make ends meet, hard work is the key to survival. Often times parents with young kids are working multiple jobs to support their kids and themselves, all out of survival.
  • Resilience - Having the right mental attitude can be all you had growing up. Thinking positive in a negative situation often gets people through the darkest of times.
  • Different Perspective on Wealth - people who didn't have a lot of physical things never knew what they were missing out on, because they had other things in their life. Growing up poor you learn that the 'wealthiest' people aren't always the happiest people, so you understand that having great friends, family that you love, and enough food to eat in the fridge is what 'wealth' is really about, not that new Corvette in the driveway.
  • Frugality - growing up poor you understood the power of a dollar, and you wanted those dollars to last. Even in adulthood, you are making sure your purchases are sound, and for the best value too.
  • Gratitude - You might not have had a lot growing up, but what you did have you were grateful for. Even in adulthood you find yourself being grateful for all that you have, and wanting those items and relationships to last.
  • Appreciation of Little Things - for those of us who grew up with few material things you appreciated what you did have. Tonka trucks and GI Joes, Barbie dolls and 2nd-hand clothes from your siblings, was there anything better?
