ST. CLOUD -- A major downtown St. Cloud road construction project will again impact traffic and businesses. Starting in early June, crews will be tearing up 5th Avenue South and a portion of First Street South between Highway 23 and St. Germain Street.

The $1,700,000 project includes underground utilities, lighting and new streets and sidewalks.

City Engineer Steve Foss says the street surface and the utilities beneath are old and in disrepair.  He says the area will be closed to traffic, but they'll maintain access to businesses for pedestrians.

Foss says construction should be completed in the middle of September.

Other St. Cloud projects include sewer and water along County Road 74, sewer and alley improvements in the Cottage Place Addition, resurfacing of 6th Avenue North and Riverside Drive Southeast and a short stretch of 3rd Street North east of Cathedral High School.
