
Prep Bowl Results from Saturday at the Metrodome
Mahnomen tops Bethlehem Academy for Class 1A title
Jacob Pavek ran for two scores and threw for one as Mahnomen held off Bethlehem Academy 20-14 for the Class 1A championship Saturday at the Prep Bowl.
Pavek led Mahnomen (14-0) with 151 rushing yards. The title is Mahnomen's seventh overall.
Kyle Filzen passed for one touchdown and rushed for another for Bethlehem Academy (11-3), a private school in Faribault.
Down by a touchdown, Bethlehem Academy's Tim Angell intercepted Pavek in the end zone with just over 7 minutes to play, but the Mahnomen defense forced a three-and-out.
Pavek and Nathan Hanson connected on a 23-yard touchdown with about 2 minutes to play for a 20-7 lead, but Filzen found Angell for a 15-yard touchdown with 34 seconds to play to get within 20-14. However, Mahnomen recovered the onside kick.
Blue Earth Area takes Class 3A title with 30-7 win
Kysten Zierke threw two touchdown passes and Blue Earth Area pulled away to beat Rochester Lourdes 30-7 in the Class 3A Championship Saturday in the Prep Bowl.
David Franta had 144 rushing yards and threw two touchdowns for the second-ranked Buccaneers (13-0), who claimed their first title.
Griff Slightham had 77 yards rushing for top-ranked Rochester Lourdes (13-1).
With the game tied at 7-7, Zierke and Isaac Darrington hooked up on a 6-yard score with 15 seconds left in the first half. After Felix Harseim added a 36-yard field goal, Darrington caught a 10-yard touchdown pass for a 23-7 Buccaneers lead.
Franta added a 5-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Grant Phillips had three sacks and blocked a punt and field goal for Blue Earth Area.
Totino-Grace takes Class 5A title with 49-21 win
AJ LaPanta threw for 219 yards and three touchdowns as Totino-Grace beat Owatonna 49-21 Saturday for the Class 5A Championship.
It's the seventh title in 10 years for the private school in suburban Fridley.
Kez Flomo had 97 rushing yards and a touchdown for the top-ranked Eagles (13-0). Charlie Miller caught two touchdowns and Kai Barber had two rushing scores.
Colton Schock threw for 144 yards for the third-ranked Huskies (12-1).
Leading 21-14 entering the third quarter, LaPanta threw a perfect spiral midway through the frame that Miller caught in stride near the Owatonna 35. Miller outraced a defender to the end zone.
After a three-and-out by the Huskies, Flomo scored on a 43-yard run to make it 35-14. Barber later scored from 11 yards out after an Owatonna fumble.
