Minnesota House Defeats Sunday Liquor Sales Effort
ST. PAUL (AP) - Stock up on booze on Saturday.
The Minnesota House on Wednesday resoundingly rejected an effort to give liquor stores permission to open on Sundays. The measure went down on a 106-21 vote.
Supporters of relaxing the long-standing blue law tried to attach the measure to a broader bill dealing with liquor licenses.
The defeat was even more pronounced than one the year before.
Supporters say consumers should be allowed to buy liquor, wine and beer in stores on Sundays because they can buy drinks in bars that day. Opponents argued that liquor store owners are opposed to the change because they don't think it would increase sales as much as their overhead costs would rise.
