ST. CLOUD -- Brigitte's Cafe in St. Cloud is a memory for many people growing up in central Minnesota. Some people may even remember when the restaurant was called Fred's Cafe.

A woman named Brigitte Schneider moved to Minnesota from Germany and got her first job working as a waitress at Fred's Cafe.

Schneider says when she first came to Minnesota she barely knew any English. She worked at Fred's for a number of years before eventually taking over the cafe in the 1960s.

Schneider renamed the cafe Brigitte's in 1968 and moved to a location in Clearwater. Schneider's children Julie Bichler and David Olson took over the restaurant in 1998.

They moved their location to 32nd Avenue in St. Cloud about 15 years ago.

Bichler says  the restaurant is synonymous with her mother's personality, "she just always has a personality. Everybody wants to see her. She's quite the character, you might notice that."

The restaurant is decorated with family pictures and tributes to Brigitte Schneider. Bichler says they have many long time customers who have been eating at the cafe since it was Fred's.

Tom Beutel  is a weekly regular customer. He says he has gotten to know the owners and staff pretty well.

Bichler says she thinks her son Bradley Bichler may take over the restaurant and keep the tradition alive when she decides to retire.
