It's going to cost you less to fill-up your tank with gas this Fourth of July week -- compared to last year. Most stations in the St. Cloud metro area are selling a gallon of regular unleaded for $3.38 today (Monday).
The price of gasoline has dropped to the lowest level in five months, giving motorists some relief ahead of the July 4 holiday. The national average fell below $3.40 per gallon today (Tuesday). However, gas prices are taking a bit longer to fall in Minnesota. The statewide average is $3.54.
The government says gasoline will be cheaper this summer than previously expected thanks to a drop in the price of oil. The Energy Department says drivers should pay an average of $3.79 per gallon at the pump from April through September.
We're starting the work week with gas prices at $3.69 a gallon at most St. Cloud metro area gas stations. That's slightly lower than the statewide average of $3.72 a gallon. It's also .20 cents lower than the national average of $3.89 a gallon.
U.S. Senator Al Franken is going after oil speculators, in an effort to bring down gas prices. During an interview with WJON news this (Wednesday) morning, Franken says he's co-authored legislation that would prevent speculators from artificially inflating the price of fuel.
A price spike at the gas pump today. We started the day at an average price of $3.57 a gallon in St. Cloud. By this afternoon, the cost had jumped to $3.79 at some pumps.
