New Law Has School Districts Reworking Lunch Menu
WILLMAR (AP) - Local school districts are revising their school lunch menus to comply with a new federal law that takes effect in July.
Willmar district administrators don't expect changes in their school lunch program will result in a price increase. But, some school board members are concerned it could lead to more wasted food. The new law requires schools to serve more fruits and vegetables and place stricter limits on breads, grains, meats and cheeses.
Schools will be required to serve 3/4 to 1 cup of vegetables and 1/2 to 1 cup fruit each day. Nutrition director Annette Derouin says she plans to offer a combination of fresh and canned produce.
Meat and meat alternatives will be limited to 10 ounces to 12 ounces a week.
