You may think it's hot now, but don't worry: it'll get worse. We're not yet to the dog days of summer. Every time my air conditioner kicks on I swear I can see my bank account getting drained at an alarming rate.

Speaking of rates: where does Minnesota land compared to those other 49 losers in total energy cost? For a state that experiences temperature extremes both hot and cold, it probably won't surprise you.

Minnesota Ranks 5th in Total Energy Costs

Upper Midwestern-ish states make up the top 5 on this list, with miserable old Wyoming coming out on top (for once); followed by North Dakota, Iowa, Montana (ew), and finally Minnesota. How'd we get here?

If it wasn't for the cost of home heating oil, we wouldn't be anywhere near the top 5; or even the top 20. Minnesotans pay the 4th-highest costs for home heating oil at $409/month.

Some bright spots (not too bright cuz that costs $$$):

  • Minnesota is 41st in monthly electricity costs ($123)
  • Minnesota is 38th in monthly motor fuel costs ($148)
  • Minnesota is 18th in monthly natural gas costs ($103)

Wyomingoniansorwhatever pay - on average - $1087 PER MONTH for home heating oil. They're tops in cost to fuel their Mad Max vehicles (that's what they all drive, right?).

Of all places in the union, New Mexico pays the least for energy usage, followed by Arizona.

It's all of those illegal energigrants crossing the border and stealing energy from our sun. BUILD THE WALL (or a giant umbrella).
