UPDATE: Hibbing Man Charged in 2012 Death of Girl

VIRGINIA, Minn. (AP) - A Hibbing man is charged with murder in the 2012 death of his former girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter.

Twenty-six-year-old Russell Shannon Johnson was arraigned Friday on a second-degree murder charge.

Johnson was arrested Thursday. Reports say bail was set at $500,000.

The girl - Caroline Shenze Marie Medicine-Chavez - died of head trauma in March 2012.

According to the complaint, Johnson was alone with the girl. He told police that Caroline fell and hit her head.

Reports say the case was stalled until July of this year, when a woman told investigators that Johnson told her he had pushed the girl and she flew into a wall and hit her head.

Johnson's public defender says his client maintains his innocence. Johnson is due back in court Sept. 15.
