Minnesota farmers made more money last year, compared to the year before. The median net farm income was nearly $120,000 among about 2,500 Minnesota farms in 2010 -- that's up from just over $33,000 the year before when net incomes were depressed by low profits in the livestock industry.

It's going to be about three more weeks before full-scale fieldwork begins on Minnesota farms. In its first weekly crop-weather report of the season for Minnesota, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Monday that this winter's heavy snow and below-average temperatures have put spring fieldwork behind last year's pace, but near the five-year average.

The owner of a dilapidated farm in northeastern Minnesota has been cited after investigators say they found a half dozen animals starved to death. St. Louis County sheriff's officials say four horses, a cow and a goat were found dead at the farm.

Federal officials say a record number of pets and livestock were killed by wolves in Minnesota in 2010. Wolves attacked 139 livestock animals and birds and 23 dogs.
