Area businesses that count on snow are optimistic the forecast for several inches of snow this weekend is correct. Brian Techel is from North Central Truck and Equipment in St. Cloud. They are a distributor of snowplows. He says, if the snow starts to fall, their phones will start to ring.
The Duluth area is digging out from its second blast of heavy snow in a week. Lake-effect snow dropped several inches on the Duluth area Sunday on top of a foot or more that fell on Saturday, pushing totals as high as 16 inches.
We officially had 2.5" of snow in St. Cloud yesterday (Monday). Our first snowfall in the month. We're still over two inches below normal for February.
With the snow we received on Monday and Wednesday, we've now had 8.6 inches of snow here in St. Cloud in January. Believe it or not that's actually two inches above normal for the month.
The snowfall is causing some problems on the highways. The State Patrol says they've responded to a handful of crashes on Interstate 94 -- especially between Avon and Albany.
The State Patrol is reporting there were over 440 crashes statewide on Saturday. The heaviest snow fell just to the north of St. Cloud, there was a narrow band from St. Cloud to Hinckley that got dumped on with 10-11 inches of snow.
St. Cloud State University's April weather summary has some surprising statistics in it. It seemed by all accounts that April was colder and wetter than normal. But, in fact, its was nearly normal in both temperature and snowfall.
Winter has made a comeback in Minnesota just a few days after the official arrival of spring. An early spring storm dumped nearly a foot of snow in parts of central Minnesota.
