Conservationists have closed on an $11 million deal to protect nearly 2,000 acres of land along the Mississippi River northeast of Brainerd. The project used $11 million of state Legacy Amendment funds to buy the tract from longtime owner Potlatch Corporation, which had considered selling the land for development.

The National Weather Service has announced that the flood warning for the Mississippi River in St. Cloud has been cancelled. However, water levels on the river remain extremely high. There's some minor flooding in low lying areas through the metro area.

Flood waters are still rising near Aitkin, where the Mississippi River is expected to remain above the flooding stage until Tuesday. The Minnesota Incident Command System says the river was at 18.1 feet at Aitkin on Sunday morning. The flood stage there is 12 feet.

Kayakers Rescued from Swollen Mississippi River

Two kayakers had to be rescued from the Mississippi River. At about 2:15 p.m. yesterday (Monday) a bicyclist in Sauk Rapids heard calls from two people stranded on an island near Lions Park.
