ST. CLOUD -- Hundreds of area families enjoyed a beautiful summer night at Whitney Park in St. Cloud for the first-ever "Movie Under the Stars" event.

At just $5 per person and $8 per family, the event offered an affordable Friday night destination for families who came out to watch Despicable Me on a large, inflatable screen.

"It's just a fun time with the family that's affordable," says Amy Dostal of Sartell. "My kids like movies, so we thought it'd be a good time."

"We drove an hour to be here," says Chad Brooks from Baxter. "It seemed like a fun and unique thing to do and we're excited for it."

St. Cloud Recreational Coordinator Allie Hemmer helped to put on the event.

"We just wanted to offer some new recreational experiences for St. Cloud," Hemmer says. "It's been a pretty big trend in the [Twin Cities] so we wanted to get on board with it."

Hemmer says she hopes a successful first event will pave the way for more Movie Under the Stars events in the future.

"We're hoping to do a whole series next year," Hemmer says. "If we can get the sponsors, we'll do it again."
