The Sartell-St. Stephen school board is leaning towards a May 24th special election vote for a new high school and facility updates across the district. The board originally discussed a May 31st vote that would have required mail ballots.

A decision to move forward with planning a new high school could be made by the Sartell-St. Stephen school board on Monday night. If the board approves having a bond referendum for a new school, the next step would be a decision on where the building would go.

A plan to build a new high school in Sartell, along with upgrades to each school in the district, will be presented to the school board in the near future. The Sartell district has been studying its facilities with a community task force since March to come up with a solution for growing enrollment in the district.

This week, WJON is featuring several area superintendents to highlight their school district before the 2015-2016 school year kicks off. Today, we highlight Jeff Schwiebert, superintendent of Sartell-St. Stephen schools. Schwiebert became superintendent last year.

The Sartell-St. Stephen School District is expected to see continued growth but at a slower pace for the next 10 years. The district has seen enrollment increase by 25.9 percent for the past 10 years and now has 3,759 students enrolled in its schools, compared to 2,985 in 2005-2006.

The Sartell-St. Stephen school district is working with over 80 community members on Wednesday night to create a long term vision for its facilities.

When it comes to fundraisers, local schools are phasing out unhealthy activities like selling candy bars or bake sales for fun runs and walk-a-thons.

Sartell is still planning to start school after Labor Day, despite district complaints to the state. The holiday won't be until September 7th this year, which is the latest day the holiday can land.

The Sartell-St. Stephen school district has seen continued growth during the last several years.

As Sartell-St. Stephen students head to their first day of school today (Tuesday), the districts new interim superintendent heads to his first day of work. Mike Spanier was selected by the school board in July as the interim superintendent of Sartell-St. Stephen for the 2013-14 school year, after the previous superintendent resigned.
