A live bait favored by winter walleye anglers are at the center of an escalating policy dispute between bait shops blocked from importing the minnows and fisheries managers upholding the ban as a critical defense against fish disease and invasive carp.
Fisheries managers have changed course and decided to allow live bait on Mille Lacs Lake this season after all. The Department of Natural Resources had planned to bar most anglers from using live bait as part of a package of restrictions aimed at reviving the popular lake's struggling walleye population.
The Minnesota DNR has announced the 2016 Lake Mille Lacs fishing regulations. Mille Lacs will have a "catch-and-release" walleye season, meaning there will be no walleye allowed from May 14th through December 1st.
The Department of Natural Resources has named 17 people to its new Mille Lacs Fisheries Advisory Committee and a new point person for the agency's efforts to revive the popular lake's struggling walleye population.
