MINNEAPOLIS -- A St. Cloud man who is deemed a career criminal has been sentenced to 17 years in a federal prison for being a felon in possession of a gun.

25-year-old Shawn Roering admitted that he had a stolen semi-automatic rifle and tried to sell it in August 2011.

Because Roering is a felon, he is prohibited from having a gun at any time.

He has previous convictions in Wright County for aiding an abetting a robbery, fleeing police in Morrison County and drug sales in Benton County.

Roering was sentenced under the Armed Career Criminal Act which calls for a minimum of 15 years in a federal prison.
